The Best Pink Desk Mats, and the Sizes That Actually Fit a Small Desk!

Soft hand-painted pink desk with three correctly scaled desk mats showing small, medium and full-width fits

Every desk mat listing uses the same strange numbers. 31.5 by 15.7. 23.6 by 13.7. 35.4 by 17. Nobody ever explains them, and they look like somebody measured badly.

They're not random. Every one of them is a whole centimetre size rounded to one decimal place, and once you know that the whole category makes sense. 80 by 40 centimetres is 31.496 by 15.748 inches, which is sold as 31.5 by 15.7.

And that matters, because the default depth doesn't fit two of the desks you're most likely to own. A standard mat is 15.7 inches deep. IKEA's KALLAX desk is 15 and three eighths. The mat is deeper than the desk.

So this is the size guide first and the material guide second, because size is where people actually get it wrong.

Every odd size is a metric size in disguise

One manufacturer publishes both units on the same page, which settles it.

As sold, inchesWhat it actually is
23.6 by 13.760 by 35 cm
31.5 by 15.780 by 40 cm
36 by 1791 by 43 cm
47.2 by 23.6120 by 60 cm
48 by 17122 by 43 cm

The arithmetic closes it every time. 80 centimetres is 31.496 inches, sold as 31.5. 40 centimetres is 15.748, sold as 15.7. 90 centimetres is 35.433, sold as 35.4. 60 centimetres is 23.622, sold as 23.6.

Why this is useful rather than trivia. Once you know the real unit, two listings that look different are often the same mat. A 31.5 by 15.7 and an 80 by 40 are identical. And a listing quoting something that's not a clean centimetre conversion, like 35.5 by 15.4, is either a loose measurement or a genuinely different cut. Worth checking before you buy.

One correction I had to make to my own notes. The small size is 60 by 35 centimetres, which is 23.6 by 13.7 inches. The 23.6 by 11.8 you see a lot is 60 by 30, and that's a mouse pad footprint, not a desk pad. Both exist, they look almost identical in a photo and only one of them will sit under a keyboard and a mouse together.

Depth is the constraint, not width

Nobody buys the wrong width. Everybody buys the wrong depth.

A desk is usually wider than any mat you can buy, so width just decides how much bare desk shows at the sides. Depth decides whether the mat fits at all, because it has to clear the front edge and leave room behind for the monitor stand.

Here are real desk depths, from IKEA's own US listings:

DeskDepth
KALLAX desk15 3/8 in
TORALD15 3/4 in
MICKE, all three sizes19 5/8 in
BRYTNING20 7/8 in
LINNMON / ADILS23 5/8 in
LAGKAPTEN / ALEX23 5/8 in
UTESPELARE gaming desk31 1/2 in

Now put the standard 15.7 inch mat against them.

On a KALLAX desk the mat is deeper than the desk. It overhangs the front edge by about three eighths of an inch, which means the front lip curls every time you lean on it.

On a TORALD it clears by one thirty-second of an inch, which isn't clearance, it's a coincidence. There's nowhere for the monitor stand to sit.

On a MICKE, at 19 and five eighths deep, the same mat leaves about 3.9 inches behind it. That's the first depth where a standard mat is genuinely comfortable.

On a LINNMON or a LAGKAPTEN, at 23 and five eighths, you get about 7.9 inches behind the mat, which is plenty for a monitor foot and a light bar.

So measure the depth of your desk before anything else. If it's under 16 inches, you want a 13.7 inch deep mat, not a 15.7.

The sizes that fit a small desk

Here's the whole decision in one table.

Your desk depthMat depth to buyMetricTypical size
Under 16 inches13.7 in35 cm23.6 by 13.7
16 to 19 inches15.7 in40 cm31.5 by 15.7
19 to 23 inches15.7 or 17 in40 or 43 cm31.5 by 15.7, or 36 by 17
23 inches and over17 in or more43 cm plus35.4 by 17, or 47.2 by 23.6

On width, the rule is simpler. A mat that stops well short of both sides of the desk reads as a placemat. One that runs most of the width reads deliberate. A 31.5 inch mat covers a 47 inch desk properly. A 23.6 inch one is for a genuinely tiny desk or a shelf.

Felt, PU, cloth and cork, what each one is

Four materials and four completely different objects. The listings rarely make the difference clear.

Wool felt is the warm one. A well-known maker publishes theirs as German merino wool felt at 3.5 millimetres, and makes two admissions worth reading before you buy. it's "Not designed to be used as a writing surface", and although it works with optical mice they recommend a different product if mousing is the point. Expect colour and texture to vary between batches, because it's wool.

Wool felt over cork is the version that solves the slipping. One maker layers merino wool felt over a 2 millimetre cork backing for 3 millimetres total. The cork is the non-slip element rather than a rubber layer. That matters, because rubber is what eventually marks a desk.

PU leather is a built-up material: a base fabric, a polyurethane coating, a colour coat and a textured finish. It doesn't crack or fade easily. The failure mode is stated plainly in the reference literature: the surface of some artificial leathers rubs and wears off with time. That's the peeling you've seen on a three year old mat, and it's a property of the material rather than a defect.

Cloth is the gaming answer. A micro-woven surface over a rubber base. Real numbers: one major brand's standard cloth pad is 2 millimetres and its heavy version is 6. The thick one is comfortable and the thin one keeps your keyboard at the height you set it.

Cork on its own is the eco option, usually double-sided with leather on the other face. it's the quietest surface of the four.

Why there's almost no pink wool felt

I went looking properly and the answer is that it barely exists.

Neither of the two established wool felt desk pad makers publishes a pink colourway. Greys, charcoals, a warm sand, sometimes a deep red. No pink.

So a pink felt mat is synthetic felt, not wool. That's a real difference and not a snobbery. Synthetic felt takes dye brilliantly, which is exactly why the pink exists. It doesn't have wool's density or its way of ageing.

An XXL synthetic felt mat at 35.5 inches is the large option, and a merino wool felt pad at 14 by 33 inches is the real wool one if you'll accept a neutral colour and put the pink somewhere else.

Stitched edges, thickness and the things that fail

A cloth mat without stitched edges will fray, and the manufacturers say so themselves.

One gaming brand states the purpose of its stitching directly: reinforced stitched edges to avoid fraying, and that the stitched edges guard against surface peeling. That's the whole reason the feature exists, and it's the single spec I'd check on any cloth mat.

Thickness is a preference, and here's how to choose it. 2 millimetres keeps your keyboard at the height you already type at. 6 millimetres adds noticeable cushioning under your wrists and raises everything. Felt at 3 to 3.5 millimetres sits between the two, which is part of why it feels nice under a keyboard and not under a mouse.

The non-slip layer is worth a thought. Natural rubber grips hardest. Cork grips well and is the gentler option on a finished wood desk. A mat with no backing at all slides every time you push the keyboard.

And the small print on writing. If you actually write on your desk, a felt pad is the wrong purchase by the maker's own admission. A PU leather or cork-backed pad gives you a firm surface to press on.

The new mat smell, and what to do about it

A new PU or synthetic mat smells, and there's a boring, correct answer.

The US Environmental Protection Agency notes that indoor concentrations of volatile organic compounds can run up to ten times higher than outdoors, that products release them both while being used and while being stored, and that the remedy is ventilation.

So unroll it and leave it somewhere with air moving for a couple of days. Don't put it straight under your keyboard the day it arrives. That's all there's to it, and it beats the "it'll air out" line every competing page gives with no source attached.

The other shipping problem is curl. Mats ship rolled and want to stay rolled. Unroll it the other way and leave something heavy on the corners overnight. Rushing it with heat is how you mark a PU surface permanently.

The pink ones I'd buy

Sorted by material, because that's the decision that actually matters after size.

PU leather, the tidy one.An Aothia large PU pad, the standard Aothia leather pad or the non-slip version. A YSAGi pink leather blotter, the large YSAGi protector and the dual-sided YSAGi are the same idea from a different maker.

The thin one, if your keyboard height is already right.A BUBM double-sided PU pad at 2 millimetres and 31.5 inches publishes its thickness, which almost none of them do.

The XXL, for a full-width desk.A pink XXL leather mat at 35.5 by 15.4 inches is the one on my desk, and an ENHANCE extra large PU mat is the alternative.

Cork-backed, if you have a wood desk you care about.A YSAGi double-sided cork pad at 35.4 by 17.

The cute ones.A scalloped pink mat at 31.5 by 15.7, the smaller scalloped version, a purple scalloped mat or a kawaii purple one at 31.5 by 12. A lavender leather mat at 36 by 17 is the pastel route, and the pastel setup guide has the test for whether a colour is really one.

Small desk, or a second mat for a shelf.A 27.5 by 11.8 pink mat or a dual-sided XL pink mouse pad two pack.

And one that's none of the above.A silicone writable desk mat is the low-glare option if you photograph your desk a lot, which matters for the reason covered in how to make your desk look aesthetic in photos.

What I'd buy first

Measure your desk's depth, then buy for that number.

It takes thirty seconds and it's the only measurement that decides whether the mat works. Under 16 inches means a 13.7 inch mat. Everything else means 15.7 or 17.

Then pick the material by what you do at the desk. Mousing and gaming, cloth or PU. Typing and looking at it, felt. Writing on it, PU or cork.

Then pick the colour last, and consider a neutral mat with pink objects on it rather than a pink mat under neutral objects. it's usually the better looking room.

What I'd not buy: a 15.7 inch mat for a desk under 16 inches deep. A cloth mat with no stitched edges. A felt pad if you write by hand at your desk.

If the desk is still being built, the 12 things that actually matter is the buying order and my own setup is every object on mine. Why two pinks stop matching is worth reading before you buy a mat to go with something pink you already own, because the mat is the largest colour in the room.

For the rest of the desk, the pink monitor light bar comparison, the pink mechanical keyboards under 100 and the pink headphone stands are the three things that sit on top of it. If this is a present, pink gaming gifts under 25 and gaming gifts under 50 are the bands most mats fall into. Everything I own is on my faves and there's more about me on my about page.

Pink desk mat FAQ, the questions I get asked most

What size desk mat should I get?

Buy on depth. If your desk is under 16 inches deep, get a 13.7 inch mat. From 16 to 19 inches, 15.7 works. Above 23 inches you can go to 17 inches or more.

Why are desk mat sizes such odd numbers?

Because they're metric sizes converted to inches and rounded. 31.5 by 15.7 is 80 by 40 centimetres. 35.4 by 17 is 90 by 43. Once you see it you can't unsee it.

Will a standard desk mat fit an IKEA desk?

It depends which one. A 15.7 inch mat is deeper than a KALLAX desk at 15 and three eighths, and clears a TORALD by about a thirty-second of an inch. On a MICKE or a LAGKAPTEN it fits comfortably.

What's the difference between a desk mat and a mouse pad?

Mostly footprint. 23.6 by 13.7 inches, or 60 by 35 centimetres, is a desk pad that takes a keyboard and a mouse. 23.6 by 11.8, or 60 by 30, is a large mouse pad. They look nearly identical online.

Is felt or leather better for a desk mat?

Felt looks and feels warmer and sits around 3 to 3.5 millimetres. One major maker says its wool felt pad isn't designed as a writing surface and suggests a different product for mousing. PU leather is firmer, wipes clean and is the better choice if you write or mouse a lot.

Do PU leather desk mats peel?

The surface of artificial leather can rub and wear off over time. That's how the material is built rather than a fault with a particular mat. it's the trade you make for a wipe-clean surface.

Why does my new desk mat smell?

Volatile organic compounds, which products release both in use and in storage. The Environmental Protection Agency's remedy is ventilation, so unroll it somewhere with moving air for a couple of days before you use it.

Is there a pink wool felt desk mat?

Not from the two established wool felt makers I checked, neither of which publishes a pink colourway. Pink felt mats are synthetic felt, which takes dye far better and is why the colour exists at all.
